The consequences of speeding

If you are caught speeding you’ll face a minimum £60 fine and three penalty points. This can be increased to a £2,000 fine, six points and a driving ban for serious offences. You’ll also face increased insurance premiums and higher fuel consumption – just to arrive a few minutes earlier – if you make it!

North Yorkshire Police are currently targeting motorists who break the speed limits in the county and will use every tactic and resource available to them to prosecute speeding motorists.

If you hit a pedestrian they have a much greater chance of surviving if your speed is lower.

If you hit a pedestrian:

  • at 40 mph there is a 90 percent chance they will be killed.
  • at 35 mph there is a 50 percent chance they will be killed.
  • at 30 mph there is a 20 percent chance they will be killed.
  • at 20 mph there is a 2.5 percent chance they will be killed.
