Road rules

  • Ride far enough away from the edge of the road to avoid drains and gutters.
  • Ride one behind the other when riding with your mates on busy or narrow roads.
  • Learn your arm signals and use them before turning right, left, overtaking or stopping.
  • Look behind before signalling or manoeuvring.
  • Never pull out from a junction without checking the main road is clear.
  • On many roads you’ve got your own cycle lane. If there is a cycle lane use it.
  • Ride like a professional, obey traffic light signals and road signs.
  • Give way to pedestrians when turning from one road into another.
  • Stop for pedestrians at crossings.
  • Stop for the red light at traffic lights.
  • Give horses or other animals plenty of room. Don’t sound your bell or horn as you could scare them.
  • Only cycle in bus lanes if there is a cycle shown on the road sign.
