In-car safety
As a young driver it is your responsibility to make sure that you and passengers under 14 wear a seat belt at all times. For passengers aged 14 and over it is their responsibility. However, as the driver you should insist that everyone in your car wears a seat belt before you set off; this includes passengers sitting in the front and rear of the vehicle.
Seat belts are designed to work with airbags. Without them, if you are involved in a crash, your airbag will inflate at between 300 and 600mph and could cause serious injury or kill you.
Seat belts restrain you in the event of a collision and prevent you from hitting the steering wheel or windscreen, being thrown around inside, being ejected from the car or being thrown forward – hitting the airbag with tremendous force.
Wearing a seat belt really is the single most important thing you can do to ensure your safety when travelling in a vehicle.
Why wouldn’t you wear a seat belt?
There are many reasons as to why young people don’t wear a seat belt, some people:
- Forget
- Can’t be bothered
- Think it unimportant because they’re only going a short distance
- Don’t think they need to if they’re sat in the back
- Squeeze in the car with their mates and don’t want to fiddle for the belt
- See that no-one else is wearing one and they don’t want to be different
- Feel pressured not to
- Find them uncomfortable
- Can’t find the buckle
- Don’t want to crease their clothes.
These are all just excuses. You wouldn’t go on a roller coaster without fastening yourself in, so don’t get in a car without fastening your seat belt. And if you are the driver, don’t make a move until everyone is belted up.
