Prepare yourself

If you’re planning on riding a bike then make sure that you’ve done the training and are well prepared to take to the roads. Cycle training isn’t just for kids it’s for anyone who uses the road!

The training will give you the skills you need to ride safely on the roads. Call 08458 727374 and ask for the road safety team to find out where your local cycle training centre is or for general information about cycling safely.

Once you’re fully trained and ready to take to the roads make sure that you:
  • Have the right size bike – you could get one of those cool bikes with more than one frame size. On the right size bike the balls of your feet should touch the ground.
  • Have the right lights on your bike. You need a white one at the front and a red one at the back. Make sure you have a red reflector at the back of your bike too.
  • Check your brakes and make sure they work properly.
  • Check your tyres for punctures.

Plan your journey using safe roads or cycle paths. The quickest route might be the most dangerous with the fastest traffic so you might need to take a different route.
