Driver distraction
Driving requires concentration so when drivers become distracted it can cause them to crash. Many crashes are caused by driver distraction.
If you’re a passenger in a car make sure that you keep quiet and don’t distract the driver. You messing around and being silly puts peoples lives at risk, including yours!
Be aware that young drivers are already four times more likely to be involved in a crash than other drivers, and having a car full of other young people significantly increases this risk – young drivers are twice as likely to die in a road crash when carrying passengers their own age.
When you’re in the car make sure that the driver isn’t distracted by anything else either. This could include them using a mobile phone, programming sat nav systems, eating or drinking, messing around with controls in the car or reading directions.
If they do any of these things then ask them to stop and to concentrate on their driving. You might feel like you’re speaking out of turn but they probably won’t mind and if you point out that the vehicle is drifting they'll probably appreciate your caution!
