Driver fatigue
Tired drivers are bad drivers so make sure that the person driving you home isn’t showing signs of being tired.
Look out for the driver:
- Not being able to keep their eyes open
- Having difficulty focusing their eyes
- Finding it difficult to keep their head up
- Daydreaming
- Yawning
- Rubbing their eyes frequently
- Drifting over into other lanes
- Tailgating other traffic
- Missing signs or driving past exits
- Being irritable and restless
- Drifting off the road
- Not being able to remember how far they have travelled
If you find them doing any of these things then ask them to stop in a safe place and take a rest. They should drink two cups of coffee or a high-caffeine drink and have a 15 minute rest to allow the caffeine to take effect.
If a driver continues to drive when tired:
- They will be less alert
- They will have slower reaction times
- Their judgement will be impaired
- It could lead to fatal consequences
