Driver fatigue

Tired drivers are bad drivers so make sure that the person driving you home isn’t showing signs of being tired.

Look out for the driver:
  • Not being able to keep their eyes open
  • Having difficulty focusing their eyes
  • Finding it difficult to keep their head up
  • Daydreaming
  • Yawning
  • Rubbing their eyes frequently
  • Drifting over into other lanes
  • Tailgating other traffic
  • Missing signs or driving past exits
  • Being irritable and restless
  • Drifting off the road
  • Not being able to remember how far they have travelled

If you find them doing any of these things then ask them to stop in a safe place and take a rest. They should drink two cups of coffee or a high-caffeine drink and have a 15 minute rest to allow the caffeine to take effect.

If a driver continues to drive when tired:
  • They will be less alert
  • They will have slower reaction times
  • Their judgement will be impaired
  • It could lead to fatal consequences
