The consequences of drink-driving
If you are caught drink-driving, you face:
- 14 years' imprisonment, an unlimited fine, disqualification from driving for at least 2 years and a mandatory extended driving test, if you cause death by careless driving under the influence of alcohol.
- 6 months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to £5,000 and disqualification from driving for at least 12 months (3 years if convicted twice in 10 years), if you attempt to drive while above the legal alcohol limit.
- 3 months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to £2,500 and discretionary disqualification from driving, if you are in charge of a vehicle whilst above the legal alcohol limit.
- 6 months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to £5,000 and disqualification from driving for at least 12 months, if you refuse to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis.
As well as the above you face loss of your car, job or partner, increased insurance costs, difficulty in hiring vehicles and a criminal record.
If you are convicted of drink driving the endorsement will stay on your licence for 11 years if the offence is:
- Drinking and driving – shown on your licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80.
- Causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs – shown on your licence as CD40, CD50 and CD60.
- Causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis – shown on your licence as CD70.
